Explorers 0-2 years

Our Explorers room provides a stimulating play based learning environment for our youngest children at Brougham Street, children stay in this room until they are two years old. Our key person approach is very strong and as a result of the loving, nurturing relationships with their key person our children develop a strong sense of security, which allows them to have the confidence to learn and develop. We value the important of our parents and through our gradual settling-in period staff learn about the children and therefore can tailor the care to meet each individual child’s needs. Staff follow the child’s routine from home to ensure continuity for both the child and parents. In the Explorers we provide different home learning initiatives such as a book and a bear to share, activity bags and rhyme cards. We have a separate sleep area within the room where children can have a peaceful sleep in a cot.

We provide a wide range of activities for our young children particular those that stimulate their senses, as this is how children of this age learn best. We provide sand, water, paint, malleable resources such as playdough, gloop and oats to name a few, that are available at all times for the children to choose. We have a sensory area with an interactive bubble tube, we also have treasure baskets with different resources which stimulate children’s learning. We have some young babies that are none mobile, however they still investigate all areas of provision as staff take them round to engage in different play.

We are very lucky in the Explorers room to have free flow access to the outdoors, we provide waterproof suits for our children so they can freely explore the range of activities outside. Staff often take the children out for a walk in the double pushchairs down to the canal basin to feed the ducks, wander up Skipton woods to spot the wildlife and trips to Craven Court to see the sparkly lights at Christmas.
